Open letter: Now is the time for a stronger and more democratic Europe!

Monsieur le Président de la République,
On behalf of Les Jeunes Européens – France (JEF France) and the Young European Federalists (JEF Europe) we would like to congratulate you on being re-elected as President of the French Republic.
Representing a federalist youth movement with more than 10,000 members in over 30 European countries, including France, we would like to express our hope that your second presidential term will be dedicated to making Europe more united and democratic. It is now or never for deepening European integration: citizens are calling for a European Constitution as part of the Conference on the Future of Europe, pro-EU governments are in charge in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and elsewhere, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine is putting both our solidarity and the capacity to defend Europe to test.
You have been calling for scaling up the protection of the EU’s fundamental values, strengthening the position of the European Parliament, developing new EU’s own resources, and increasing the Union’s sovereignty. We believe these goals can be only achieved by finalising European integration and bringing about a genuine political union that can defend its values at home and abroad while serving its citizens better.
The European project is based on successful multi-speed integration, with certain countries developing deeper forms of cooperation and attracting others over time, including both those belonging to the EU and prospective members. This is why we believe that France under your leadership should use the momentum and support the establishment of a Convention to implement the citizens’ recommendations developed as part of the Conference, including a European Constitution binding the coalition of willing member-states.
We would also like to use this opportunity to kindly invite you to join our March for Europe in Strasbourg on Saturday, 7 May. The March will start at 16:00 at Place Kléber, with young people from all over France and Europe demanding the implementation of the citizens’ proposals developed during the Conference on the Future of Europe.
